Professional Trusteeship
The Pensions Act 2004 introduced the formal requirement for trustees of occupational pension schemes to:
- Have appropriate knowledge and understanding to carry out their role as a trustee;
- Put in place internal controls to administer and manage their scheme.
This is in the context of greatly increased complexity and costs of operating schemes.
Employers and members are now also very aware of the risks to their financial standing and security if schemes are not properly run. The result has been an increasing realisation amongst employers, trustees and members of the advantages of having a professional trustee acting alongside the lay trustees of a scheme.
